DOCTORAL STUDY AND GRADUATE RESEARCH ASSISTANT OPPORTUNITY

Dr. Thanh Bui at the Health Promotion Research Center (HPRC) of the NCI-designated Stephenson Cancer Center at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC or OUHealth) is seeking candidates, particularly from Lao PDR, Cambodia, and Vietnam, for a doctoral program and for graduate research assistant (GRA) positions. Under Dr. Bui’s mentorship and support, the selected candidates must apply to and be admitted to a relevant doctoral program at OUHSC through an independent process (earliest start time: Fall semester, 2021). Examples of relevant doctoral programs include a PhD program offered by the College of Public Health, a PhD program offered by the College of Allied Health, a PhD program in Psychology (offered by University of Oklahoma, Norman campus), or a PhD program in Data Science (offered by University of Oklahoma, Norman campus).

Once admitted to the doctoral program, the candidates will be co-mentored by Dr. Bui and will be working with Dr. Bui as a GRA for 20 hours/week. The GRA will receive a monthly salary/stipend for this work. (In Vietnam and Lao PDR, the graduate research assistantship is often known as “scholarships from professors” because the GRA salary/stipend will be enough to cover reduced tuition and living expenses). The GRA’s tasks include assisting Dr. Bui in managing his ongoing research projects, which use mobile health (mHealth) technology to promote cancer prevention practices (e.g., helping people quit smoking or receiving human papillomavirus vaccine uptake). Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to managing IRB applications and other regulatory compliances, working with mHealth staff to design the interventions using the Insight™ platform, designing the study assessments in REDCap, managing data collection, conducting data analyses as requested, and assisting in the preparation of manuscripts, grants, and conference presentations. Training and support will be provided to fulfill these functions.

Preferred qualifications (for the first step: applying to the GRA position):

• Completed or will complete a master program in health science before August 2021
• Have experience in implementing health research projects and data management
• Be proficient in using one statistical software (e.g., SPSS, SAS, and/or STATA)
• Have good organizational and communication skills
